History of Longmont

Foothills Painting is proud to be serving homeowners in Longmont CO. Here is some history of the city:

In 1858, a group of pioneers from Steins, led by a man named O.C. Smith, settled in the present-day site of Longmont. The town was first called the "Hogbacks" because of the hogbacks, or ridges, that characterize the area. However, the name was later changed to Longmont because of the long stretch of mont, or mountain, that the town is located on.
Longmont's early years were spent primarily as an agricultural community, with wheat, corn, and sugar beets being the main crops. The town did not really begin to grow until the late 19th century, when coal was discovered in the area. The discovery of coal led to an influx of miners and other people looking to make their fortune, and the population of Longmont grew rapidly.
The coal mines eventually played out, but by that time Longmont had established itself as a thriving community. The early 20th century was a time of growth for the town, with the establishment of several new businesses and the growth of existing ones. The population continued to grow, reaching over 5,000 by the mid-1920s.
The Great Depression hit Longmont hard, but the town was able to recover and continue growing. This growth was interrupted by World War II, but afterwards Longmont once again became a thriving community. The post-war years were a time of great growth for the town, and by the early 1960s the population had reached over 20,000.
Longmont has continued to grow in the years since, and is now a thriving city of over 90,000 people. The city has a rich history, and its people have a deep sense of community. Longmont is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
